Frites Shop – Philadelphia (closed)
This fry shop in Philadelphia was opened by my friends Eric and Kathleen. Their fries were very much appreciated and were praised in the local press. Sadly, propably due to the location, their business didn’t start as expected and I heard they had to close their shop.
Where? somewhere on South Street, Philadelphia
Last visited: 2001, closed down soon afterwards
I used to live two blocks away on Pine. My roommate and I used to go down to the Frite shop a few times per week. Loved everything about it…the frites and dipping sauces, the decor, and the owners, who were very friendly. I hope one day they decide to open up a shop again somewhere, alas, until then, I am nostalgic for this place.
The Frite Shop was fabulous! Pleasant, simple but well thought out decor, Potatoes cut fresh often right as you ordered. Specialty mayos (for dipping) changed daily my favorite was Wasabi. And the Chimay beef stew was Amazing! and went perfectly with the frites. They were definitely too good for South Street, and ahead of their time in Philly. If it opened in about a dozen different neighborhoods here today it would blow up! I missed it enough to web search it nearly ten years later, hoping for a new location…
Belgian Cafe on 21st and Green has excellent pommes frites!
I am from the Philadelphia area and I do remember this shop. The next time i went to south st to visit it, it was no longer there. I long for some authentic Belgium fries. If anyone from the are sees this please point me in the right direction.
